Addition/Renovation
Albany, Georgia
Client: Dougherty County Board of Education
Area: 81,907 sq. ft.
Total Cost: $11,274,934.00
Cost/Square Foot: $137.65
Completion: January 2006
The existing modernist buildings of Monroe Comprehensive High School in Dougherty County, Georgia served as the muse for the innovative and contemporary design of this large scale addition. The exterior elevation was reinvented by an inspired 2006 interpretation of a 1950s school.
The added 81,907 square feet doubles the size of the facility and provides the canvas for a masterpiece crafted in glass and pre-cast concrete. The covered entry portico softens the façade through its curvature and translucent panels. The interior of the building is naturally illuminated by glass walls which also serve as the link to all the major core areas of the school on one side. A picturesque outdoor courtyard and open air colonnade are seamlessly incorporated for function and artistic vision. Vocational classrooms, media center, cafeteria/kitchen, and administration areas complete the addition.
