St. Marys Middle School
St. Marys, Georgia
Client: Camden County Board of Education
Capacity: 1220
Area: 161,920 sq. ft.
Total Cost: $17,507,000.00
Cost/Square Foot: $108.12
Completion: July 2006
St. Marys Middle School in Camden County, Georgia incorporates its minimalist inspiration with details and landscaping archetypal to this community. The exterior façade of the school, which is located on a major highway, seamlessly integrates two predominant design features. The brick and glass piano curve on one side and massive stone and glazed walls positioned at 90 degree angles on the other, creates a complex and multi-dimensional visual experience.
The dramatic interior drum in the commons is accentuated with concrete columns framing the vast skylight situated in the heart of the school’s core. Upon entering the vestibule, the eye is teased with glimpses of the lobby and administrative area. The media center and tiered cafetorium are highlighted with an abundance of natural light produced by floor to ceiling glass walls. The carefully constructed landscaping plan, fashioned from indigenous plants and materials, such as palm trees and oyster shell beds, provides the link between modern design in a traditional coastal environment.
